Can you add insulation to a house you already live in?
Retrofit insulation in Lynwood means adding blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, to the attic floor or the outside walls of a house you already live in, so it holds its temperature better. Most jobs start in the attic, because a lot of older houses have little or nothing up there.
If the upstairs bedrooms stay hot into the evening or the room over the garage never warms up, the house is usually losing heat through an attic or walls that were never insulated well. What moves the price is how much space we're covering, whether old insulation has to come out first, how many gaps need sealing and whether we're doing the attic, the walls or both. The schedule mostly turns on that prep and on any permit inspections, and your estimate puts what we'd do, and in what order, in writing so you know your number before anything starts.
How can you tell an older house needs more insulation?
Hot rooms upstairs
The bedrooms under the roof stay warm long after the sun goes down, even with the AC running. That usually means the attic is thin or the old insulation has settled, and every summer you wait the AC works harder and the power bill shows it.
Droppings in the attic
You open the hatch and see flattened, gray insulation with droppings or nesting in it. That usually means animals have been living up there, and the longer it sits the more the smell and mess spread into the material.
Cold walls and drafts
The outside walls feel cold to the touch in winter and you can feel air near outlets and baseboards. In an older house that usually means empty wall cavities, so you end up heating the outdoors every cold month.
How we handle a retrofit insulation job
With an older home, I start by finding out when it was built and what wiring is in it, because that decides whether we work in the attic, the walls or both. Before anything new goes in, roof leaks get fixed, any old knob and tube wiring still in use gets sorted out and dirty old insulation comes out, since covering a problem just hides it for the next person. If you have a fireplace or gas appliances, I check how they vent, because a tighter house without the right ventilation can pull their exhaust back inside. Then we seal the gaps around lights, pipes and the attic hatch, vent any bath fans that empty into the attic to the outside, and blow in loose fill evenly, full at the edges and clear of the eave vents so the attic can still breathe.
Most retrofits come down to the attic, and our attic insulation work is where we seal and top up the space over your rooms. When the ductwork runs through the attic, I'll usually point you to spray foam insulation instead, because it seals air while it insulates, though it costs more. For most other houses, sealing the gaps and topping up with loose fill is the better value.
Attic first
This suits houses where the walls already have something in them or where you want to start with the biggest gain. The attic is usually the thinnest and easiest place to reach in an older house, so it's where most of our retrofits begin.
Attic and outside walls
This suits older houses with cold outside walls and empty cavities behind the plaster or drywall. Doing both on one job means we check the wiring and do the prep once, instead of opening the house up twice.

When you call or send the form, I set a time to come out and look at the attic, crawl space or walls with you. Nothing gets priced until I've seen the space.
Get your written estimate
You get a written estimate that says what needs fixing first, what goes in and what comes out. That's the price for your house, so you can compare it and decide without anyone rushing you.
Prep, insulate and walk through
On the job we cover floors and paths, do the prep in order and then insulate. Before we pack up, we walk the finished space with you.
Why Lynwood homeowners call us for retrofit insulation
The owner prices and runs it
I come out myself to look at the job and write the estimate, and I'm on site running our small crew while the work gets done. The person who told you what the job needs is the one checking that it's done that way.
Built for lived-in Lynwood homes
I started this business in 2023 after my first years insulating new houses, because I wanted to work in homes where families already live. Most of our calls come from Lynwood and the cities around it, where tight attics and old wiring are a normal part of the job.
Licensed in California, fully insured
We're fully licensed and insured. When you compare bids, the C-2 insulation classification from the state licensing board is the one that covers installing insulation for temperature or sound control.
On a retrofit, the order of the work matters more than the material that goes in last. Call (424) 338-0203 or send us a few details about your house, and I'll set a time to come take a look.
Retrofit and attic insulation work in Lynwood
In Lynwood, building permits for alterations and repairs come from the city's Building and Safety Division, and the state's energy rules apply to changes made to existing houses, not just new ones. Whether your retrofit needs a permit is something we confirm with the city, and when it does, we pull it and set up the inspections. You can follow those inspections on the city's online Citizen Access Portal. Los Angeles County also runs a program called EBD that covers insulation and air sealing for its participants, so if you're in it, tell us before we write the estimate.
We're based in Lynwood and work in many of the cities and county areas around it. Much of what we open up here is older houses with tight attics, bath fans that empty into them and a room over the garage that never feels right, and we see the same on jobs in South Gate and Compton.
Questions about retrofit insulation in Lynwood
How much does retrofit insulation cost around Lynwood?
Insulation work in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area usually costs about $1,600 to $5,300 per job. That's the going rate for a whole job in the area, not our price, and your written estimate gives the figure for your own house.
Can my walls be insulated without tearing them open?
Usually, yes. Drill and fill is a common way to do it, with small holes near the top of each wall cavity, from inside or outside, and blown-in insulation filling the space behind them. If your house was built before 1980, lead safety rules can come into play depending on how much the work disturbs the walls, so ask us how we handle that on your job.
Should my old attic insulation come out before new insulation goes in?
Often it should. Old attic insulation is often fouled with debris or animal droppings, and older loose fill may be vermiculite, which can contain asbestos, so removing it and putting in only new material may be the safest approach. If yours needs to come out, removal shows up on your written estimate as part of the job.
How long does retrofit insulation take?
Most of the time goes into prep, not into blowing in the insulation. Removing old material, sealing gaps, fixing a leak or venting a bath fan all add time, and a permit adds inspection visits, so your estimate lays out each step before we schedule.
Do we have to leave the house while you insulate the attic?
For blown-in work in the attic, you usually don't, because we cover the floors and paths and work from the hatch. Spray foam is different, and there's a re-entry time, when it's safe for you, the kids and pets to come back, that we go over with you before the job.
What is the best way to insulate an attic in an older house?
Seal the openings in the attic floor first, then add blown-in insulation on top. Sealing between the attic and the rooms below saves energy, lowers fuel bills and helps prevent moisture problems up there, and it keeps the new insulation from fighting a draft.
Other insulation work that pairs with a retrofit
If ducts run through a hot attic or a space needs moisture and air blocked at once, foam insulates and seals in one pass, at a higher price.
When the walls are fine and only the upstairs runs hot, an attic job with sealing and a fresh layer of fill is usually all the house needs.
